What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a Chinese martial art.  Myth and legend tells the story of a budhist nun who escaped the burning Southern Shaolin Temple and created Wing Chun after watching a Crane and Snake fighting.

Wing Chun has become renowed for it’s simplified approach to Kung Fu that could be taught quickly and easily to overcome a bigger, stronger opponent.  In the 1960s and 70s roof top battles between the students of different Kung Fu schools attracted many young martial arts students including film star Bruce Lee.

These days our emphasis is on teaching an authentic Kung Fu system perfect for close-quarter self-defence situations and a great way to get your heart pounding and your body moving.

You’ll practise Wing Chun’s famous chain punches, rapid hand strikes and low-level kicks with a partner, learn the traditional forms and hit the pads, bags and use other equipment to hone your skills.

Who is Wing Chun suitable for?

With an emphais on practicality and economical movement – our style lacks the flambouncy associated with Kung Fu flicks which are afterall, entertainment!  And while you will get pushed to give it your best, work faster and hit harder we firmly believe that martial arts are for people of all age, size and sex.

In fact since our martial art was said to founded by a woman, Wing Chun is famed for being a system perfect for smaller people or anyone looking for a system based on good technique.

Our adults classes have students ranging from early teens through to their 50s and our kids martial arts classes are for children aged 4 – 7 years and 8 – 13 years old.

Will I get fitter?

Definately.  We teach a martial art where you will get fitter (not a fitness class that pretends to be a martial art) so classes are a combination of steady state working and high-intensity action.

Since our martial art is explosive our class workouts replicate that intensity and are specific to our martial art.  We always recommend you work at YOUR pace.

During classes you’ll get a sweat up hitting the pads and being pushed through you paces as you work through full-body workouts and a combination of exercises designed to strengthen and complement your Wing Chun skills.

Will I learn to defend myself?

Absolutely!  And more important than learning practical techniques you can use from your first lesson, you’ll learn simple strategies to help identify and prevent trouble occuring.

Wing Chun is a close-quarter martial art and with most violent attacks happening from within talking distance — our system is perfectly suited toward self-defence.

Will I get hurt?

Nope, our classes are taught in a safe environment and you’ll always work using appropriate contact.  Contrary to popular belief if you’re getting injured regularly through training then you can be training regularly!

During classes we encourage our students to work together at an intensity both are comfortble with and our instructors keep a strict eye to make sure everyone trains sensibly.

Wing Chun in the Cinema

More recently Wing Chun has hit the main-stream cinema with the release of the Ip Man film.  While the celluloid version isn’t quite what you’re be learning in class you’ll get a glimpse at the Hollywood version below!

If you’d prefer to see a more realistic example of a class in action check out our Adults Kung Fu page.
